Donations to Quezon City public elementary schools
Since 2004, One Small Step Forward Foundation has made it a point to address the most urgent book and equipment needs of the public elementary schools where it operates.
Nearly every year since 2005, OSSFFI have been donating story books and children’s reference books such as illustrated dictionaries, geography photo books, and illustrated science (astronomy, geology, biology, anatomy, meteorology etc.) references. Although most of the storybook donations are printed outside the country and are hard bound, the Foundation has also sourced soft cover reading materials, especially the dual-language (English and Filipino) stories from local publishers Hiyas, Lampara, Ibong Adarna, Anvil, and Vibal. Since OSSFFI built the Bagumbayan Elementary School Learning Center and Library, it has received the most number of book donations over the past two decades.
Nearly every year, just before summer classes begin, the school principals try to tap their donors for donations to their Brigada Eskwela, where the school mobilizes the parents and students to help prepare the classrooms for the school opening. This usually includes repainting, fixing still-repairable tables and chairs, fixing of toilets and drinking water dispensers, laundering curtains, covering DepEd books, sweeping and waxing the rooms and hallways – and all of these tasks require purchases – paints and paintbrushes, brooms, floor wax tins, mops or mop heads, nails, screws, glue, WD40, lightbulbs, electric socket replacements, etc. OSSFFI tends to respond affirmatively to these Brigada Eskwela requests.
Also nearly every year in December, the school principals request for donations to their Teachers’ Party raffle, and in most cases, OSSFFI donates raffle gifts and-or cash prizes.
In certain years, DepEd will want to celebrate the International Teachers’ Month – the last one was in 2019 - and the schools like Libis Elementary School, Bagumbayan Elementary School and Pura V. Kalaw Elementary School request for donations so they can mount teacher-focused programs.
Educational toys such as modelling clay (play-doh), building blocks, memory games, chess sets, construction sets, scrabble sets, dominoes, scrablle, jigsaw puzzles, for example, the donation of physical activity games for the Special Education department of Old Balara Elementary School in March 2017, or the six tournament-size chess sets for New Era Elementary School in 2024.
Sports equipment such as takraw balls, badminton rackets and shuttles, volleyballs, and nets, such as those donated to Libis elementary School and Bagumbayan Elementary School from 2012 to 2015.
Brand new desktop PC units complete with speakers and AVRs, such as those donated last March 2014 to Bagumbayan Elementary School; second-hand laptops, such as the 13 units of Acer Aspire One netbooks and Asus eee PC netbooks, donated to Libis Elementary School last October 2020; and external hard disks for the master teachers, such as those donated by the Foundation to Bagumbayan Elementary School back in February 2018.
